The Kite House

The Kite House, a lovely Georgian style of architecture was built for Mr. William Edgar Kite between 1948 and 1951 by local area builders. The interior was designed similar to Carter Grove Plantation in Williamsburg. It has eleven spacious rooms, a large foyer and hallways. The entrance hall has three arches. Mr. Kite visited Monticello to get proportions on the large white columns in front. A wing facing the mountain was added later. Mary Elizabeth Kite says her father "always lived in old houses and wanted to build a new house that looked old." Mr. Kite designed the landscaping that included approximately 200 boxwood shrubs. The Town of Elkton purchased The Kite House along with approximately 68 acres in March of 2002.
